Michigan Senator Michele Hoitenga has proposed legislation that would exempt residents aged 70 and older from paying property taxes. The bill, introduced on Tuesday, aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by seniors in the state.
Hoitenga emphasized the challenges faced by elderly citizens, stating, “People across Northern Michigan are feeling the financial burden of high taxes—especially our seniors, many of whom are on a fixed income and have worked their whole lives, only to now face losing their homes due to skyrocketing property tax increases.” She added, “If you are a retired senior or still working, you’ve earned the right to stay in your home without worrying about property taxes.”
Senate Bill 292 seeks to remove property tax obligations for individuals over 70 years old, regardless of their retirement status. This is part of Hoitenga’s broader initiative to reduce tax burdens in Michigan. Earlier this year, she introduced SB 125 to eliminate state income tax on overtime earnings.
Both legislative proposals have been forwarded to the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection for evaluation.
