Shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, Noah Coughlan, a cross-country runner, arrived in Edwardsburg’s Main Street in Cass County, Michigan. He was accompanied by a Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputy as he pushed a jogging cart decorated with an American flag. A small group of residents and children greeted him at the top of the hill, where Cass County Commissioner Sam Barrera presented him with a county challenge coin.
Coughlan is running across all 50 states on foot as part of a 5,500-mile journey to promote unity and national pride. His passage through Cass County on Presidents’ Day marked another milestone in his months-long effort.
Commissioner Barrera recognized Coughlan’s dedication by awarding him the county challenge coin, which is reserved for individuals who show exceptional service or achievement. During the presentation, Barrera said: “Running across this country takes incredible grit, determination, faith and perseverance. We are honored you’re passing through our community today and it’s my pleasure to present you with our county challenge coin. We’re wishing you strength for the miles ahead.”
Coughlan has previously completed four cross-country journeys covering different regions of the United States. With this current effort, he seeks to become only the third person known to have crossed all 50 states on foot.
“It’s a message of unity,” Coughlan said. “It’s a message that we’re stronger together. There’s nothing political about it. The flag’s not political. The flag belongs to all of us. We’ve come a long way in 249 and a half years, and we’re looking forward to the next 250.”
His journey is expected to finish around Independence Day 2026, coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary. Along his route, Coughlan honors veterans and encourages unity among communities.
Residents in Edwardsburg offered support as Coughlan continued toward Niles on Monday afternoon.
