The Michigan Senate has passed a bill introduced by Senator John Damoose aimed at enhancing Mackinac Island’s control over ferry service fees. The legislation, known as Senate Bill 304, seeks to empower the city of Mackinac Island to regulate various aspects of ferry services, including fees for parking, priority boarding, and baggage.

Senator Damoose expressed gratitude towards his colleagues in the Senate for their support. “I want to sincerely thank all of my Senate colleagues for recognizing the importance of this legislation and voting to advance it to the next step,” said Damoose, R-Harbor Springs. He emphasized the significance of this measure for maintaining Northern Michigan’s tourism industry.

The bill requires approval from two-thirds of both legislative chambers and must be signed by the governor before being placed on the ballot during the next local election. It will also need majority approval from Mackinac Island voters to take effect.

Damoose highlighted concerns about rising ferry prices affecting regional tourism. “Make no mistake, our entire region suffers if it becomes too expensive for families to travel to the Island,” he stated. He noted that unchecked price increases could deter visitors from choosing Northern Michigan or the Eastern Upper Peninsula as travel destinations.

The senator pointed out that unlike other cities in Michigan, Mackinac Island lacks ‘home rule,’ which necessitated this legislative effort. “Passing this bill took intense work and collaboration to get through the Senate,” he remarked.

With a 30-6 vote in favor, the bill now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Damoose urged prompt action from his counterparts in the House. “This is an incredibly time-sensitive matter, and I encourage my counterparts in the state House of Representatives to quickly pass this measure and give the island a voice on the issue.”
