Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the nation’s older adult population keeps rising, even as numbers for younger groups fall. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and over grew by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. The country’s senior population has surged since 1920, increasing from 4.9 million to more than 61 million by 2024.

A study released in 2021 found that nearly half of adults in this age bracket—about 28 million—are likely to need long-term services and supports, with projections indicating more than a third may eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
