State Senator Michele Hoitenga thanked President Donald Trump on March 12 for providing additional federal emergency aid to help Northern Michigan communities recover from last year’s severe ice storm.
Hoitenga said the extra support is important for rural areas that are still dealing with the aftermath of the storm. She said, “The people of rural Michigan are incredibly resilient, but many are still navigating the challenges left in the wake of this historic storm.”
Federal Emergency Management Agency funding had already been approved for recovery efforts, but it did not include utilities and personal reimbursements. The new announcement of more funds came after Michigan appealed these exclusions.
Hoitenga added, “At a time when our region often feels overlooked, President Trump’s announcement is a much-welcomed reminder that we matter, and I am truly thankful for his support.”
She also said that while the new federal funding is essential, more resources will be needed and there is still work ahead. “We must use the lessons learned from these catastrophic events to strengthen our preparedness for the future. I am dedicated to collaborating with local leaders, fellow legislators and the governor to advance these proactive initiatives,” Hoitenga said.
The senator encouraged residents to stay informed about state government activities.
