Southwestern Michigan College president David Mathews donates $500 to Frederick Stephen Upton's campaign

David Mathews, a president at Southwestern Michigan College, donated $500 to Republican Party candidate Frederick Stephen Upton, according to the Federal Election Commission.

According to records, there have been $750 in campaign contributions made by individuals affiliated with Southwestern Michigan College as of November 3. Approximately 66.7 percent, or $500, of these contributions were made to Republican Party candidates and committees.

David Mathews' contribution was the largest contribution made by someone affiliated with Southwestern Michigan College since January 1, 2019.

According to an Inside Higher Ed analysis of federal elections data, individuals that were affiliated with colleges and universities have donated five times more money to Joe Biden than to President Trump. A study by Pew Research in 2017 found that 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents thought colleges and universities have a negative impact on the way things are going in this country.
