The success of students was a topic of discussion during a recent Edwardsburg Public Schools Board of Education meeting.
Edwardsburg High School Principal Ryan Markel touted the student council, which is elected by the student body and impacts the entire district. This year’s council collected more than 17,000 items — a new record — and packed 225 boxes for the food pantry to distribute to families in the community.
The second group recognized was the National Honors Society. This student group provided 35 families in the community with toys and household essentials, like toothpaste and toilet paper. They also recently held their second blood drive, giving up their time to run the event which saved 55 lives.
The district also highlighted the accomplishments of all its athletes this past fall. The football team won its 10th straight conference championship and earned its eighth MHSAA regional and district championships. The girls’ volleyball team won the Wolverine Conference championship for the fourth time in the last five years, and the soccer team got their first conference championship and earned academic all-state honors.
“As you can see, we have lots of students that are very successful, both on the field and off the field," Athletic Director Brad Ostrander said. "And I credit a lot of that to our coaching staff, and we have a few of those we have to honor today. It doesn't matter what time I come in the office, day or night, what day of the week, I always can find certain faces in their offices, in their classrooms, either working with students academically or athletically.”
The board also handed out individual awards to athletes who showed exceptional work ethic and dedication throughout their season and earned academic all-state distinction for their combined athletic and academic achievements.
Ostrander also recognized some of the district’s coaches: football coach Kevin Bartz, who was recognized as regional coach of the year, and Sean Jesse, who was the Wolverine Conference coach of the year.
