Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer supported Whirlpool Corporation's dedication to the state by investing in affordable employee housing on Aug. 18, culminating in the unveiling of their new technical center, further enhancing Michigan's quality of life, workforce and investment environment. The celebration took place in St Joseph, Michigan.
"Two years ago, @WhirlpoolCorp recommitted to Michigan by investing in affordable housing for their employees," Whitmer tweeted. "As a result, today we're celebrating the ribbon cutting on their new technical center. Projects like this make Michigan a better place to live, work and invest."
Whitmer said the $60 million investment builds on the company's commitment to Southwest Michigan, according to a press release.
“This transformative project will help Whirlpool attract top talent, put more people on paths to good-paying, high-skill jobs and continue our mission to help anyone ‘make it’ in Michigan. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in 23 years, we are moving forward on housing and community revitalization projects across the state, and we just delivered a bipartisan budget to lower costs, expand workforce programs and power economic development. We look forward to continuing our work together to build a bright future,” she said.
"We wholeheartedly welcome Whirlpool's substantial investment in our community, reaffirming their enduring dedication to our communities,” Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph) said, according to the release.
Whirlpool's recently completed 153,000-square-foot technology center at 303 Upton Dr. in St. Joseph marked its inauguration with a ribbon-cutting event, according to Moody on the Market.
“So, this is where we do our design and development, and ultimately testing of our appliances. So, it’s everything from making sure brand-new products that we’re going to bring to the market meet our performance requirements,” Whirlpool’s Pam Klyn said, WNDU reported.
Whirlpool has now invested $230 million on new or expanded facilities in the St. Joe and Benton Harbor area in the past 10 years.
