The Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee has approved a bill that involves the Michigan Law Enforcement Memorial Monument.
The bill, Senate Bill 321, which is sponsored by State Sen. Kim LaSata (R-Bainbridge Township), fixes an issue in the current law to allow the names of court and corrections officers to also be added to the monument.
The names of Security Supervisor Joseph P. Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald Kienzle, who were shot and killed by an inmate in the Berrien County Courthouse in 2016, would be added to the monument under LaSata's bill. Their names are currently listed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument.

"My bill allows for these local heroes, along with 19 others and any future court officers who sacrifice their lives, to be properly honored by the state they served,” LaSata said in a press release. “I thank the members of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee for their support and am hopeful the bill advances quickly.”
The bill makes it so that the state monument aligns with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument.
The bill will now go to the full Senate for consideration.
