A bill introduced by Michigan Sen. Kim LaSata (R-Bainbridge Township) that allows the names of law enforcement officers, court officers and corrections officers who died in the line of duty to appear on the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument has unanimously passed the Senate.
“This is an important reform that will ensure court officers who sacrifice their lives on the job will be properly honored by the state they served,” LaSata said in a statement. “I thank my Senate colleagues for their support and am hopeful the House will take swift action on it as well.”
An amendment to Senate Bill 321 was also passed to allow the names of reserve officers killed in the line of duty to be added to the memorial as well.
If it is signed into law, the names of two Michigan officers, Security Supervisor Joseph Zangaro and Court Officer Ronald Kienzle, can be added to the Michigan memorial, according to a press release from LaSata's office. The officers' names already appear on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
The bill now goes to the House.
