Berrien County Road Department recently issued the following announcement.
Heads up, it is snowing outside. Snow is INCREDIBLY dense, heavy and wet. As crews work to service the road network, this heavy snow will be displaced to the shoulders or to the side of the road. As a result, expect to see movement of items or objects located in the road right-of-way. If possible please keep garbage cans as far away from the road as possible OR delay putting them out this week, crews would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
Trash Bin Reminder & Tips:
-Do not place garbage cans in the street. It is recommended that garbage cans be placed at least 3 to 5 feet off from the shoulder of the road, in your driveway. Bins located properly are those placed out of the way of the snowplow or snow being pushed aside as a result of maintenance operations.
-Do not place garbage cans on top of snow piles. This placement might cause your garbage can to tip over and disburse along the road. Placement on uneven ground makes it difficult for garbage trucks to set empty bins down.
-Timing is everything. Getting up a bit early in the morning to handle this chore can avoid having garbage cans knocked over by strong winter winds or snowplows overnight.
-Retrieve your garbage or recycling bins soon after collection. Empty receptacles are vulnerable to winds and snow removal operations. Bins could cause a hazard if they fall into a roadway.
These tips can help make collection day safer and easier on both snowplow and garbage truck drivers.
