Berrien County issued the following announcement on Mar 16.
If you come across a stray animal, here are a few things that you need to know:
Report the stray animal to your local Animal Control and tell them whether you intend to hold the animal or surrender it to Animal Control. Owners of lost pets often call Animal Control to see if anyone has dropped off or reported an animal matching their pet's description. Berrien County Animal Control may be reached at (269) 927-5648.
If you hold the animal after reporting it to Animal Control, post a notice (for example, on social media or the newspaper) in an effort to find the owner. If the owner does not identify themselves in 10 days, you may keep the animal or find a home for it.
If the owner is known and wants to surrender the animal to you, get a signed statement from the owner proving their surrender of the animal to you.
