LANSING, Mich. — Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, criticized Governor Whitmer's State of the State address, stating that it did not reflect the reality most Michiganders are facing. In his statement, Nesbitt highlighted the struggles of the people while the governor celebrated her own accomplishments.

Nesbitt argued that the governor's speech demonstrated a lack of understanding of the challenges faced by ordinary citizens. He stated, "This was the speech of someone who has spent too much time in the Lansing bubble — someone who doesn't worry about the price of groceries, or heating her home in the winter, or whether her kids can catch up in school."

The Republican leader pointed out that Michigan's unemployment rate and median household income are among the worst in the nation, despite the governor's claims of success. "For most families, any increase in pay has been wiped out by inflation," Nesbitt said. He also highlighted the issue of population decline, with Michigan ranking 46th out of 50 states for population growth.

Nesbitt emphasized the Republican belief in empowering taxpayers to make decisions about their own money. He pledged to fight against tax increases proposed by Democrats in Lansing, arguing that hardworking Michigan businesses and families know how to spend their money better than the government does.

Regarding energy policy, Nesbitt expressed support for responsible energy sources that ensure reliable power regardless of weather conditions. He criticized the "California-style Green New Deal schemes" that would make energy more expensive and less reliable.

In terms of education, Nesbitt criticized Democrats for abolishing reading standards and school accountability. He promised to fight for better support for students, teachers, and parents to improve educational outcomes and move Michigan's schools into the top 10.

Nesbitt concluded his statement by highlighting the Republican vision for Michigan, which prioritizes communities, schools, and families over bigger state government and special interests. He stated, "Michiganders living every day under the harmful policies of Gov. Whitmer and President Biden deserve better."
