Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, criticized Senate Democrats for their failure to address the issue of fentanyl trafficking and the U.S. border crisis in Michigan. Nesbitt expressed his frustration, stating, “Once again, the Democrat majority has chosen to cater to their special interests rather than working to solve real problems to improve the quality of life for the people of Michigan. It is a tragedy that they are using their slim majority to protect milkweed and butterflies rather than working on commonsense solutions to protect the people of this state from the lethal trafficking of fentanyl into our local communities.”

Nesbitt highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the devastating impact of fentanyl addiction on Michigan residents. He criticized Democrats for prioritizing issues like the redefinition of milkweed over addressing the pressing issue of fentanyl trafficking. Nesbitt pointed out, “Every day, we are losing a growing number of Michiganders — friends, neighbors, family members — to fentanyl addiction and overdoses. Fentanyl is streaming across the open border at lethal rates, yet Democrats are focused on butterflies.”

The article mentioned that Senate Democrats rejected two measures proposed by Senate Republicans to address the Strong Borders, Safe Communities legislation in conjunction with efforts to control and eradicate noxious weeds. Despite the efforts of Senate Republicans to tackle the fentanyl crisis, the Democrats' focus on other issues has hindered progress on this critical matter.

In light of these developments, Nesbitt called for a shift in priorities to protect Michigan residents from the harmful effects of fentanyl trafficking and the broader implications of the U.S. border crisis.
