City of New Buffalo issued the following announcement.
Amtrak will commence track work that will require the closure of the railroad crossing at Whittaker Street at Oselka Drive, beginning Wednesday, May 6, through Friday, May 15.
Amtrak will be making track repairs that improve the ride quality and safety of the track where it crosses Whitaker Street, then repaving the road crossing to create a smoother
driving surface. Amtrak employees and contractors will be on site working as follows:
Wednesday, May 6, 7 a.m.:
Placing barricades closing Whittaker Street crossing to all pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Detour will be marked via Willard Street.
OVERNIGHT Wednesday, May 6, 9 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. & Thursday, May 7, 9 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.: Remove crossing panels and asphalt. Smoothing out the railroad track by redistributing the ballast stone (also known as ‘surfacing.’)
Friday, May 8 – Friday, May 15, 6 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Additional daily ‘surfacing’ adjustments as necessary, then replacement of crossing panels and repaving.
Saturday, May 16: Whittaker Street crossing re-opened.
The work will involve heavy machinery that makes noise. Thank you for your patience while we work to keep the nation’s passenger train system safe and reliable.
