Sixty-two students have been awarded a total of $249,000 in scholarships by the Berrien Community Foundation.

“Throughout the past year, we had ten new scholarship programs created,” Susan Matheny, Berrien Community Foundation program manager, said to 94.9 WSJM. “Some scholarships give out more than one, so more than one student gets a scholarship. So it’s a little more than last year.”

Scholarships range from $1,000 to $13,000. Matheny said scholarships are created by individuals, families and organizations, many times to memorialize someone, reward positive behavior, show gratitude for volunteering or to encourage a student along a particular academic or career path.

Since only interest from the scholarship endowments are used from year to year, a $25,000 investment could result in a $1,000-per-year scholarship forever, Matheny explained.

More than 300 scholarship applications were received and reviewed. Ten new scholarships were added to the BCF scholarship list this year.

WSJM has published the complete list of scholarship recipients.
