MICHIGAN SEA GRANT: Forming Partnerships to Share Indigenous Knowledge

Giving

Michigan Sea Grant issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.

We’re highlighting a project currently underway in the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community

(KBIC) that centers Anishinaabe-Gikendaasowin. In the Ojibwe language, Anishinaabe refers to Indigenous Ojibwe people, and Gikendaasowin is defined as “knowledge” or “intelligence.” Find pronunciations and roots for these words in the Ojibwe People’s Dictionary: https://ojibwe.lib.umn.edu/

With funding support from Michigan Sea Grant, researcher Val Gagnon at

Michigan Technological University is working with KBIC Natural Resources Department and other tribal partners to synthesize, honor, and spread Indigenous community knowledge about natural resources and environmental science.

The goal of this project is to help integrate Indigenous knowledge into stewardship, governance, and research for natural resources in the Great Lakes region. Keep an eye out for more news as this project develops! https://bit.ly/3hUnZN8
