City of New Buffalo issued the following announcement.
People have likely noticed several improvements made to the waterfront area over the summer to address high water impacts. The City has systematically and incrementally been working to address flooding issues along North Whittaker Street between the bridge and the public waterfront area. Previous actions included the installation of a temporary concrete barrier to prevent water from topping the banks of the Galien River as well as stopping the ability of the Galien River to backflow through storm sewer outlets into the roadway.
With the heavy use of the community’s beach and waterfront waning as fall starts, the work to address damage to the asphalt in this area is ready to begin.
The work was originally scheduled to be completed between September 24th and substantially completed by September 25th. The contractor was delayed due to equipment issues and the work is now scheduled to be completed on September 28th and 29th.
“Given the warm weather expected for the weekend the delay may work out as a benefit as our waterfront will likely be busy over the weekend”, stated City Manager David Richards.
“We look forward to completing the last of our 2020 high water level mitigation work early next week”.
During the new paving window of September 28th and 29th, access through this section of roadway will be restricted.
People seeking to access the waterfront area should use Marquette Drive from the east.
Boat owners and haulers are being encouraged not to try removing boats via the City boat launch until work is completed on September 30th.
The work is intended to serve as a temporary repair to the area with a more permanent repair planned as part of future improvements to the public beach and waterfront area.
