The Western Michigan University Confucius Institute issued the following announcement.
Most Western Michigan University offices will observe winter recess from Thursday, Dec. 24, through Friday, Jan. 1. Winter recess begins with the end of fall semester, and some campus services will cease or have reduced hours through the start of spring semester.
- Residence halls open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.
- Spring semester begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11.

Office closings apply to non-represented University employees. Many represented employees may have contractually scheduled regular work days Dec. 24 to Jan. 1 as the University continues to provide services during the recess. Represented employees should direct questions to their management.
Many offices, including admissions, Bronco Express, financial aid and the Office of Student Transitions will be closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 1.
The aviation shuttle will operate through Dec. 18 and resume for spring semester service on Jan. 11.
The Bernhard Center will be closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. It will open again Jan. 4 to 8 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and resume spring semester hours beginning Jan. 11, which are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Store and vendor hours vary and are posted online.
Metro Transit service on campus ended Nov. 20 and resumes Jan. 10 for spring semester.
Miller Auditorium has suspended operations until further notice. Use the contact form for questions.
Sindecuse Health Center, including the pharmacy, is closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 3. Swipe access only to the building is available Jan. 4 to 10, and spring semester hours resume at 8 a.m. on Jan. 11. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.
The Student Recreation Center is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 20 through 23, closed Dec. 24 through Jan. 3, open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Jan. 4 through 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 9 and 2 to 6 p.m. Jan. 10. Spring semester hours resume at 6 a.m. on Jan. 11.
Unified Clinics will close Dec. 24 to Jan. 1. Regular hours resume at 8 a.m. on Jan. 4.
Waldo Library is closed from Dec. 19 through Jan. 6, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 7 and 8 and closed Jan. 9 and 10. Spring semester hours continue at 8 a.m. on Jan. 11.
ENERGY SAVINGS
To reduce energy costs during the recess, heating and cooling systems in all office and classroom buildings controlled by the WMU Building Energy Management System will be in holiday mode, unless a space is exempt from the program. The temperature in spaces will not go outside of the range of 55 to 85 degrees. Portions of a particular building that do not regularly go into night setback mode will not go into holiday mode.
Employees are reminded to shut off and unplug all non-essential electronics before winter recess.
