City of Buchanan issued the following announcement on Apr 15.
Winds Cause Outages in South Bend, Southwest Michigan areas
Indiana Michigan Power crews are working to restore power after heavy winds caused multiple outages in the South Bend/Elkhart area and portions of southwest Michigan.
Trees and limbs blowing into power lines were a significant cause of outages, with wind damage also causing broken cross-arms and downed wires.
Estimated times of restoration are being established for each outage. Outage locations and times of restoration are available at IndianaMichiganPower.com/OutageMap
As of 5 p.m., about 3,500 customers were without service in the South Bend and Michigan area, and about 2,100 were affected in Michigan. By 6 p.m., I&M estimates about 1,500 of the South Bend/Elkhart customers, and more than 300 Michigan customers, without power are expected to be restored.
Service to more than 1,500 additional customers who lost service this afternoon has already been restored. Though outages will be resolved throughout the evening, tonight and Friday morning if necessary, continuing winds may cause additional outages.
Customers are encouraged to the I&M mobile app to report outages and monitor your account – IndianaMichiganPower.com/App.
Customers can also enroll in text and email alerts on the app or at IndianaMichiganPower.com/Alerts
SAFETY INFORMATION
· Avoid downed power lines. Report them to I&M by calling 1-800-311-4634 or using our app or website, or call 911 to report them to emergency services.
· Look around carefully. Fallen limbs and other debris can hide downed power lines, and a downed line may be contacting a fence out of line of sight.
· Be careful driving, as there may be fallen limbs and debris in the roads. And please watch for first responders and utility personnel working on and near roads.
· Trees could fall or drop limbs at any moment, please look up.
