Traditional Holiday & Tree Lighting Ceremony

Experience the spirit of the holiday season on Saturday, December 3, at the City of Portage Traditional Holiday & Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Begin the night at the City Centre Mayor’s Tree.  At 6 PM, the winner of the “I Love Portage” essay contest will read their essay, followed by the lighting of the Mayor’s Tree.  Sing carols as you stroll down Bicentennial Trail behind a horse-drawn wagon with Santa and Mrs. Claus to Celery Flats (7335 Garden Lane).

At Celery Flats, visit the Holiday Tree and Card walk sponsored by R.W. LaPine Inc. Children can share their Christmas wishes with Santa at Stuart Manor or mail their letters to the North Pole inside the Schoolhouse. Watch ice sculpture demonstrations, pet animals at the OsborneKlein-sponsored petting farm, create a holiday craft, and enjoy the Proclamation Brass Band and Portage Northern Choir performing traditional holiday favorites. Complimentary desserts will be available thanks to our sponsor, Lake Michigan Credit Union, at Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen in the Grain Elevator and the Portage Community Center will offer seasonal beverages (cash only donations welcome).

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food and clothing donations to benefit the Portage Community Center.  Parking is available at the Celery Flats Historical Area, Portage Zhang Senior Center, Portage Parks & Recreation, and Portage City Hall.  Special thanks to our sponsors Lake Michigan Credit Union, OsborneKlein, and R.W. LaPine Inc. This event is FREE and open to the public and runs from 6 to 8 PM.

For more information, visit the Facebook event @CityofPortageMI or contact Portage Parks & Recreation at (269) 329-4522.
