State Senator Michele Hoitenga has called on Michigan lawmakers to eliminate state income tax on overtime earnings, following President Donald Trump's recent legislative initiative. The president's bill, described by Hoitenga as a "big, beautiful bill," aims to remove taxes on overtime earnings and is currently under Senate review after passing in the House.

Hoitenga, representing Manton, expressed her support for the federal legislation and urged Michigan legislators to adopt similar measures. “President Trump is leading the way to bring America into an economic golden age with his ‘big, beautiful bill’ that would, among other important provisions, end taxes on overtime,” she stated. “Now is the time for Michigan lawmakers to follow the example of his economic agenda and bring an end to taxes on overtime in our state once and for all.”

The senator introduced Senate Bill 125 in March, aiming to provide tax relief for middle-class families in Northern Michigan. This proposal seeks to exempt overtime earnings from state income tax. Additionally, Hoitenga proposed Senate Bill 292 to eliminate property taxes for residents over 70 years old. Both bills are currently under consideration by the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection.

“My bill to end state income tax on overtime earnings would bring much-needed relief to the forgotten middle-class families of Northern Michigan who struggle to make ends meet and are overtaxed because of Lansing Democrats,” Hoitenga remarked.
